“Pure Desire: Helping People Break Free from Sexual Struggles†is a good book to help men caught in Satan’s schemes of sexual bondage. I will caution up front, if you are not interested in reading about the importance of Jesus Christ as a major factor in one’s recovery from sexual sin, then this book is not for you. Dr. Ted Roberts does a good job of showing that sexual struggles are not just a religious problem where one needs to pray more and try harder. He also shows that sexual struggles are also not just merely a psychological issue where one needs to identify past hurts, and identify triggers for relapse. Instead, Dr. Roberts presents a combined approach – he explains sexual bondage is not just about sex, but about self-medicating hurts, and he combines that with Biblical help to understand why men can get caught up in this lifestyle and feel helpless to escape (see Romans 7:14-25. Overcoming sexual struggles will take God’s help, support from others, and a desire for purity more than the desire to enjoy the pleasures that sexual sins offer.I view this book as more supplemental information for men in recovery than as being a true how-to guide. If you are looking for more direct help, I recommend Dr. Robert’s Conquer Series classes (see https://conquerseries.com). You can find online and in-person courses, and these will provide the practical steps to help men break free from sexual struggles.
While doing my research for a book I am writing about the harms of pornography, I heard about Pure Desire by Ted Roberts. It is the book that I’ve heard the most about in recent times that has helped people leave behind pornography. Many men whom I deeply respect have recommended it. After hearing of the life changing impact it had on them, I read it. I was very impressed, particularly by an accompanying Seven Pillars workbook. The workbook is a great resource for a group working together who are looking to fight the spiritual battle against sexual impurity. The author offers an unvarnished look at sexual addiction, unabashedly non-academic, and practical. One criticism I have is that some of the ways Roberts talks about addiction. His definition seems rather broad (deciding not to do something and finding yourself not only doing it, but getting worse) (p 26). Aside from that, chapters are short, accessible, and practical. One won’t be bored reading this book. It includes helpful illustrations (maps of brain functions, charts and helpful diagrams). It is strong on biblical references, low on academic references, and highly practical. It is also quite readable and inherently interesting. The author’s writing style is both engaging, accessible, and hard hitting. Young and older men who follow Jesus will likely connect very well with the material
This is probably the best primer on sexual addictions from a pastoral perspective. Some of the material needs to be read very slowly and digested and prayed over. The insight of addiction as a false curative for emotional/spiritual pain is presented clearly. I highly recommend this book for those who are struggling with addictions and for those who are contemplating starting a ministry to those who are struggling with addictions.
This book, and all of Dr Ted Robert's and Pure Deaire's materials, have been a key part of my recovery from sexual addiction. Please note: the two negative, out of nearly 100 reviews, are just flat out not true! Dr. Ted NEVER advocates for anything less than a FULL and honest disclosure to the spouse.Confusion may be caused by the need to do disclosure in an appropriate why, as in not just to relieve the husband of guilt and puking his junk all over his wife in unproductive and ultimately unhealthy damaging way. But disclosure is always vital to Dr Ted Robert's.And for the other negative comment, I have no idea what they are talking about. Dr. Robert's addresses the issues of pornagraghy and sexual addiction from the Spritual, Relational, and personal responsibility angles as well addressing it as a sin issue.Bottom line, go with the majority here!
What a great testimony here. When lives are changing and bondage is being lifted off of people then we know that this is Truth. This book is about not believing the lies that have been given to all of us. Each of us has our own set of lies that makes up our belief system and subsequently our values and behaviors. Ted helps us to grow up renewed in the Truth from our Spiritual youth. When lies are replaced by the Truth then everything changes. It's just that simple. And I needed this book to understand that fundamental Truth. Thanks Ted for sharing and writing this book. My wife thanks You too.
This book is incredible for anyone who has any sort of addiction issue, especially if you are a believer and follower of our Lord Jesus Christ. All of the Conquers series and 7 Pillars of Freedom series materials are exceptionally relevant to the male believer and are desperately needed in our "Pornified" addictive, narcissistic society. My sincere and heartfelt thanks to the publisher and author for such a priceless resource!
I read this book in order to be able to mentor a friend as he goes through an addiction program where this book is the main textbook. I found it to be full of insights.
