This is an excellent work which focuses on the political changes of the 1990s and how they helped set the tone for our current toxic politics. In that decade, a number of politicians saw new opportunities to take the low road in politics as a way of advancing their careers. Political behavior often appeared substantially more brutal and cutthroat as veneers of comity slipped away. Additionally, conspiracy theories, unsupported by serious evidence, became stunningly popular, especially when advanced by conservative "talk" radio. Such radio programs were widely treated as gospel by the right and viewed as the ravings of a bunch of kooks by the left. I recognize that historians can point to many other instances of highly partisan politics dating back to the Jefferson-Adams presidential campaign, but in the 1990s we saw a substantial uptick in the blending of toxic partisanship with the technology of mass communications available to almost everyone. This is of course a continuing trend.A number of important personalities are discussed in the book including individuals such as President Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Newt Gingrich, Mario Cuomo, Jesse Jackson, Pat Buchanan, and others. I taught college level American government in the 1990s, and thought Kornacki did a particularly good job in capturing the often visceral Republican hatred of Bill Clinton at the time, and their frequent willingness to believe virtually anything bad about him from any source. Ironically, this process may have benefited Clinton since any legitimate accusation against him could easily be lost in the maze of bizarre conspiracy theories, such as the so-called "murder" of Vince Foster. Kornacki also notes Hillary Clinton's unfortunate decision to walk directly into a Republican punch by claiming a "vast right-wing conspiracy." I have no doubt that she meant every word of that statement, but it did not do her any political good to say so.Some reviewers have raised legitimate concerns about the large number of newspaper articles in Kornacki’s endnotes, but this is probably not a serious problem. Often journalists, such as Kornacki, are told a great deal "on background" or even "deep background" where they cannot reveal the sources, no matter how strong those sources may be. Thus, in a book length manuscript they often cite secondary sources that make the same point as their original source. I have done this myself in academic writing because I did not want to betray the confidential original source of my information. Also, Kornacki has some experienced and exceptionally intelligent people listed in his acknowledgements (at the back of the book) who helped him while writing the book. Whatever his sources of support and useful feedback, he has produced a deeply insightful study that is both nuanced and packed with facts. I strongly recommend this book.
Kornacki attempts to tell the story of the polarization of American politics and society by starting at the root in the 1990s. His premise is excellent, his execution against it a failure. Basically, Kornacki turns this into a discussion purely of the politicians involved - primarily Clinton and Gingrich as the main players. While well written, Kornacki leaves us with a partial story lacking any explanation.Kornacki ties the polarization of politics to a new strategy devised by Gingrich. True enough as far as it goes but this narrative misses a fundamental point - Gingrich is a footnote to history without the groundwork laid by the right wing direct mail campaigns of the 80s, the rise of conservative talk radio (mainly Limbaugh in the early 90s), and later, the early internet BBS and Usenet groups. Gingrich "led" a revolution that had been created for someone to lead by others. Had someone like Gingrich attempted his tactics 20 years earlier, it would have been a complete failure.Kornacki's singular focus on the political players and not the outside forces shaping their actions ultimately makes this book more of a recounting of well reported events than an insightful look back at how politics changed in the 90s.
Mr. Kornacki must have spent untold hours researching and studying this masterful look at the history of the current political party attitudes. I say this as the book was comprehensive and gave a deep understanding of the motivations that had a voter choosing which party to adjoin themselves to.I was very impressed at the depth of understanding the political climates during the period of Civil War through the ending of the Clinton years. This is a book that takes serious thinking as you progress through history of the parties.
Who would have thought that that skinny guy on MSNBC jumping around on the set had such a talent for writing. I expected to be informed by his work but never would have expected such a page turner. Mr. Kornacki delivers a well written account of our politics in the 80's and 90's leading up to the contested 2000 election. It is in depth and unbiased in the extreme. Obviously the writer loves his subject .I was struck by his delivery on the changing fortunes of the parties and their leaders. It reads like an exciting thriller even though we already know all the results. For anyone who wants to be entertained while also getting a view into what has lead us to today you cannot find a better book. Please enjoy.
If you want to find out why everything is now seen in terms of one party against another with zero compromise, read this book. It wasn't always this way, even if it feels like it today. Maybe one day we can go back to working together to make things a little less terrible in the world. Let's hope.Kornacki knows more about politics than 99% of people in America. I look forward to his next book.
I lived through the history, but I gained a lot from reading this book. Superbly told, eminently readable, all 500+ pages. And so many interesting parallels to what is happening in today's political arena. But another book needs to match up to this one, telling the same story from the perspective of citizens who participated in this election history. The accounting of the election details and political wrangling goes only so far to help anyone understand WHY it all happened this way.I thank Steve Kornacki for his excellent and stimulating book! And I hope he will someday try to write the complementary story that lies beneath the surface of what he has written so far.
