About the Author
Born in Guinea, author and playwright Djibril Tamsir Niane is a descendant of griots – African oral historians/storytellers. He translated Sundiata, as told by the griot Djeli Mamadou Kouyate, into French under the title Soundjata ou Epoque Mandiginue in 1960. It was later translated into English by G. D. Pickett in 1965.

I've read several stories about Sundiata. What I appreciate about this one was that it was passed down from a griot. This makes the book more poetic (not difficult to read poetic, just in a beautiful way). I loved the preface about how the spoken word means so much to the culture. While reading I had to stay out of my head. I noticed an inconsistency early on but remembered what the griot said about not placing so much weight on the differences, but appreciating the similarities in the story being told. The footnotes were so helpful! The glossary of "characters" was extremely helpful. This tiny book held so much information.
Enjoyed this book from cover to cover and was sad when I reached the end. It was recommended to me and I have since recommended it to friends and family. Shipped quickly and came as described. Especially loved the annotations in the back!
i did buy this book as used and wasnt too hurt if it was beat up around the corners because im only using it to write a paper, but the pages were falling out and someone wrote in it. The underlining and writing in the margins wasnt that big of a deal, just a little annoying but the falling out pages were truly annoying. I took a picture of the pages that fell out and it was three chunks of multiple pages not just one or two at a time. im going to request a refund

A beautiful edition of a beautiful story. An important core text for anyone interested in world literature and cultures.
I really enjoyed the story line of Sundiata and how it's told. It grabbed my attention immediately and I didn't want to put it down. However, it was very confusing to keep up with the numerous different names there are throughout the book.
The book is very well written and gives the reader an insight to one of the greatest empires of Africa. In the book there is a map, that explains the geography of the Malian empire, there are also explanations in the back of the book of names, places, african terms etc... But what makes this book more fascinating is the description of the african culture in other words customs, spirituality, religion and the role of men and women. I recommend this story to anyone who loves african culture, who simply is looking for a good book to read and share with thier kids. The story of Sundiata has messages of love, peace, determination, treason but mostly how important family and the community is important in our lives.
