I bought this book for my best friend and hula sister as she has coveted it for some time. Her dedication to hula includes total immersion in the culture of Hawaii and this geek made her heart sing.

All i expected and thensome! A very easy read. truly makes it easy to undestand the Pele and Hi'iaka saga!
This is one of the most wonderful books I have ever read or have had the pleasure to own. Translated from the early 20th century Hawaiian, into elegant turn of the century English, and published simultaneously in the original Hawaiian, beautifully set, bound and illustrated, it tells the epic and picaresque tale of Hi'iaka (in the bosom of Pele), the youngest sister of the volcano goddess Pele and her quest to fetch Pele's lover Lohi'au from the island of Kauai, and the many heroic, magical, comic and erotic adventures she has along the way. It features plenty monsters, gods, marvels, magic and resurrections and elegant "high style" language with plenty of "Dear readers". The translators are to be applauded for including these in the translation. The paintings which illustrate the tale, by a young Hawaiian artist, are by themselves, worth the cost of the book. Hi'iaka is one of the great epic characters (heroines) in world literature, combining the cleverness and resourcefulness of Odysseus and the beauty and goodness of Nausicaa. This book belongs on the shelf, in a place of honor, with the works of Homer, Vergil, Dante, Firdausi, Rustaveli, Vyasa, Malory and Sturluson. Aside from Amazon it may be hard to find this side of Hilo, but if you need an excuse for a trip to Hilo...
