From Publishers Weekly
Paleontologist Peter Larson recalls the discovery that made him and his colleagues at the Black Hills Institute of Geological Research instant stars and in trouble with the law in his memoir Rex Appeal: The Amazing Story of Sue, the Dinosaur That Changed Science, the Law, and My Life. In 1990, his team discovered the largest and most complete Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton that the world had seen. Almost immediately, however, the team (which is unaffiliated with any university) became embroiled in a dispute with the U.S. government about who owns the fossil, during which the skeleton was seized by the National Guard. Co-written with his [former] wife, journalist Kristin Donan, the book recounts the heated legal battles but focuses primarily on Larson's adventures in South Dakota, where his group eventually found six more T. rex fossils.Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

The largest, most complete Tyrannosaurus rex fossil was discovered in 1990 by Sue Hendrickson, but it was the Black Hills Institute team, headed by Larson, that did the backbreaking, labor-intensive work of carefully excavating its bones from beneath a butte in South Dakota. So how did the fossil named Sue end up in Chicago's Field Museum? Despite a verbal contract, in which Larson paid Maurice Williams $5000 to excavate and remove the fossil from his land, federal agents seized Sue and brought charges against Larson and the Black Hills Institute. The ensuing trial centered around ownership of the land where Sue was discovered and whether or not Larson and the Black Hills Institute were involved in illegally hunting and selling fossils. Larson's unfortunate experience underscores the lack of appropriate regulation for fossil collecting as well as the valuable service qualified independent collectors provide to professional paleontologists. Larson and Donnan, an NBC reporter who covered the case and later married Larson, also present the latest information regarding Tyrannosaurus rex anatomy, gender determination, and similarity to birds. While Steven Fiffer's account of events in Tyrannosaurus Sue is more objective and comprehensive, Larson and Donnan's book provides the personal, behind-the-scenes drama that only someone who lived it could provide. Highly recommended for most libraries. Gloria Maxwell, Penn Valley Community Coll. Lib., Kansas City, MO Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

As an avid follower of the original "SUE" find, I initially thought this book was a chronicle of the dinosaur by itself, sort of a rags to riches dirt to display dino story. It comes across as more of a chronicle of all the wrong things to do when hunting for fossil remains. This is the first time I've been exposed to the $$ side of such archaeological practice; especially when one is doing it out of pocket and not funded by large organizations. "Sharp" financial dealings with the land's owner? Low-balling him while collecting huge sums downstream? Lawsuits? Federal Agencies? Not what I was expecting yet is probably a huge wakeup call to all such who are involved in such practices. JCH
I first watched the documentary "Dinosaur 13" (actually 4 times) and then purchased the book. The story is amazing - finding a nearly complete T. Rex in the Badlands of South Dakota. Followed by the greed exhibited by the landowner and the injustice that our government brought upon the Black Hills Institute and it's owners. Making an example out of Peter Larson, a paleontologist and President of BHI, was travesty and misuse of our taxpayer funds. Seeing "Sue" restored and purchased by the Field Marine Museum in Chicago is heartwarming and sad. Chicago is a great city, but "Sue" should be on display in Hill City, South Dakota where was died and was later excavated. I highly recommend both the book and the documentary to everyone.
I have read other books about Sue and the Larson story and I consider this one to be the best for paleontological knowledge. This is a well-told story and quite the cautionary tale as to the unbridled power and lack of common sense from our government as to how it spends its legal resources. But I highly enjoyed the paleontology and wish the Larsons would write a book about their other finds and how fascinating the search and information about fossils can be.
I live near where Sue now resides. I vaguely remember when she first arrived, but I had not idea what occurred before she moved in. Having been to the museum to see her, watching the movie (which led me to buy the book) was truly eye opening. I'm torn between feeling like Sue isn't home and being grateful she is here so I can see her and marvel at the wonder she is - and share that with my child.
Rex Appeal is a compelling story about innocent scientists, over-reaching government, mind-boggling (and mostly unnecessary) litigation over a pile of bones uncovered and collected in rhe desolation of South Dakota. It is a book that attempts to be even-handed, but has a definite bias. It is a good read, but by its end one will have his/her fill of paleotonogists and judges of every stripe. It is a textbook about what damage overzealous bureaucrats, ignorant media types, unnecessary litigation and greedy participants can cause. Read it and fune...or weep.
Very lengthy and technical in content. I slugged through almost all of it. There's a PBS movie about this book which is much easier to digest. I did however become more interested in artifacts from this ancient era.
Very interesting story. I enjoyed learning specific details of various digs and how that related to Sue. I learned so much and can't wait to read another of Peter Larsons books. A wonderful, challenging story that we can all relate too!
Awesome book, I'm currently reading it. Very insightful and packed with facts.Peter Larson is brilliant, this man was screwed by pretty much every body.
