A+ book on the making of Indiana Jones. Inside you will find fantastic stories from the old days with inside information on the creation of the films. From Raiders to Crystal, this book covers it all. Full color photos and paintings with excellent pictures and items from the films. I plan on collecting all these Lucasfilm books by J.W. Rinzler because he has greatly impressed me with the amount of time and research put into these. You can really tell he put his heart into these books, and the high quality shows for itself. If you are fan of Indiana Jones, filmmaking, Lucas, Spielberg, and Harrison Ford then this book will deliver!
I bought The Complete Making of Indiana Jones: The Definitive Story Behind All Four Films on the 30th anniversary of Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, and boy has it been a great way to celebrate Indy's birthday. The book provides a pretty detailed history of all 4 Indiana Jones movies, from Raiders to Crystal Skull. Also, it includes storyboard and production photos. It's a fairly quick read, but it looks beautiful and you'll probably find yourself flipping through this many times as you rewatch the movies. One thing you start to realize reading the book is just how taxing the entire movie production was, both mentally and physically, for the cast and crew. While not quite as stressful for Spielberg as Star Wars was for Lucas, still it seems like every other page Harrison Ford is getting hurt or ILM fears it's in over its head. Spielberg even nearly broke down after weeks in Tunisia - a surprisingly candid recollection from an official Lucasfilm book. Also, while this book is published by Lucasfilm and hence isn't going to air dirty laundry, it still reveals quite a few interesting disagreements between the principals, including sometimes testy exchanges between Lucas and Spielberg over the story concepts (of course, relatively "testy", but still with some noticeable tension). The book spends the most time on Raiders, but also covers Temple of Doom and Crystal Skull in some depth. I was disappointed that the Last Crusade, my favorite of the films, received the least attention. There were some interesting stories about the original concept for the third Indy movie (let's just say it involves a Monkey King and no Sean Connery), but after that it whizzes by.One change I'd recommend would be to include the time or date of when a particular person said something. Rinzler includes thousands of direct quotes from the cast and crew, which is great, but it's also not entirely clear when certain people said something. I would interpret a quote that was spoken during production of the film differently than one stated some 20-30 years later in retrospect. For example, Harrison Ford says Indy III was the most fun, but was that simply something he said during a promotional interview in 1989 or his feelings 20 years later? Most of the quotes seem to come from around the making of the films, but it's not entirely clear. Overall, I wish Rinzler had included more retrospectives from the principal cast and crew.Overall, this is definitely THE book to get if you're an Indy fan. At least for Last Crusade, it's not quite definitive, but for the other movies it's pretty close to definitive.
This is probably the best making-of-the-movie book I've read so far this year.A lot of effort must have been put into research. Considering when the first Indiana Jones movie was shot, I'm very impressed by how they manage to document all this information. The book is about the production process of the 4 Indy movies, up to the Crystal Skull. The narration explains in great detail all the events that happen behind the scenes. It's filled with lots of interviews. Read from how Spielberg came up with Indy's name to the last day of shooting Crystal Skull where Harrison Ford gave Shia LaBeouf a signed hat.Reading the book is like working on the set itself. For that, it's worth the price alone. There are hundreds of high resolution production photos. Several art illustrations were put in also, such as posters, storyboards and set designs. There are 300 pages in this 15-inch (screen measurement) book. For fans of Indiana Jones, this will be an immensely satisfying book. For non-fans, this book will still impress. This book is that good.(More pictures are available on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)
I haven't read it yet, just skimmed through, but the pictures are beautiful and this will take a very long time to read through and enjoy, page by page. Looking forward to it. Paid <$25, I believe.
This is one of the best books on my bookcase. It's just a great book. I paid $35 for it, and at that it was a bargain. It's even cheaper here, so absolutely no reason to buy it.It begins with the origins of the Indiana Jones character recounted as the classic tale of what happens when Spielberg and Lucas joined forces. But with more detail than what I had heard previously. Then the process and making of each film is included with great pictures, storyboards and models of sets. Then it ends with Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The interesting part is how it details the development process and I was astonished about how many times Indy IV was going to be made and then pushed back for some reason.A great purchase. Highly Recommended.
I've bought a wide range of books over the years. Sometimes I've regretted the purchase. That is certainly not the case with this excellent book on the Indiana Jones films. I would highly recommend it - unlike some movie based books, there is a lot of substance - the fact that both George Lucas and Steven Spielburg have contributed prefaces goes to show how well respected this book is by the very people responsible for the movies. You only have to hold the book in your hands and feel its weight to know that a lot of research went in to creating it.I thought the book would be good, and was pleasantly surprised to find it even better than expected. If you enjoy the Indiana Jones movies then this would be a good coffee table book for you.Won't give any information away, but some of the ideas that didn't make it to the big screen are quite surprising. Thankfully Spielburg and Harrison Ford managed to curb Lucas's enthusiasm for sci-fi. I hope that they make one more movie - as long as it doesn't involve any more aliens or CGI based action scenes! Somehow I doubt that it will happen though. So you're pretty safe in buying this book as the 'complete' making of!
