Based on 10 years of working closely with academic deans and executives within very high research universities (including academic health centers), I can strongly assert that this is a very important book for three primary reasons.First, although the book is written by a former medical school dean, the content is literally an instructional guide on the operational, strategic, and cultural aspects involved with acquiring any level of organizational power within a university. Whether you are an aspiring dean or a sitting dean, you would be well served to read this book closely and "fill in the management blanks" relative to your academic and research experience. Leadership within any organization requires the ability to manage downwards, vertically, and horizontally - all of which are clearly spelled out in this book. This first point is enough to make this required reading for any academic leader.Second, life as a dean (or other academic executive) is not for the faint of heart and Dr. Clayman does an excellent job giving the reader an insider's view of the incredibly broad set of organizational, financial, and strategic situations you will invariably face. Such situations are difficult enough in the private sector but within a very high research university setting (particularly in the publics) the level of difficulty is magnified for reasons involving shared-governance, culture, and the nuances of managing a far-reaching mission. Read this book in order to preview situations you will face OR read it to understand how to manage existing situations.Lastly, Dr. Clayman graciously covers a topic that is rarely considered by an executive in any profession: how their tenure will end. Dr. Clayman's ability to guide the reader through the self-assessment required to critically consider this point is key. Knowing, or at least generally understanding, the tail end of your tenure will serve the reader well.In my opinion, Dr. Clayman has written a definitive guidebook for any academic/researcher placed into a position of organizational leadership and power. The book transcends typical management/leadership books that are typically filled with platitudes and vague guidance. Instead, Dr. Clayman has provided the reader with templates, metrics, and step-by-step recommendations that will prove invaluable.Dr. Clayman's book receives my highest recommendation and should be considered required reading for newly appointed deans, department chairs, or academic administrators.
I think this gem of a book is a gift to anyone aspiring to become a more effective leader, whether in an academic appointment or a key leadership position in industry. In addition to sage advice on how to think, plan and execute when transiting to a new position, this book offers timeless information on crucial aspects of leadership, namely: effective multi-directional communications, creating and hard-wiring a positive culture, strategy and its relationship to culture, building teams, crisis management and work-life balance. An engaging read with loads of practical "how-tos."
The author, Ralph Clayman, is a famous urologist and distinguished professor and scholar at the University of California, Irvine medical school. In 2009 (two years after I myself had retired) he was chosen as the preferred "inside candidate" to replace a failed predecessor dean who had been removed after 2 years of a normal 5-year term. During his own successful 5-year tenure, Clayman exceeded the expectations of the stakeholders: he quickly righted the ship and significantly enhanced the academic profile and health care facilities of the medical school. Nevertheless, in looking back, Clayman realized how unprepared he was for the "daunting tasks" of his "difficult journey". Typically, his remedy is "The Compleat Dean†based in part on the answers provided by 61 successful deans who responded to an extensive questionnaire he sent them in preparation for his book. The much greater value of the book, however, is its distillation of Clayman's remarkable insights and wisdom on all these issues, written in the clear prose of a expert writer. A must-read for aspiring deans (medical or otherwise) or anyone interested in the complexities of academic health care.
As a former physician CEO of a medical group, serving on a hospital board and working closely with multiple hospitals and a university, I can say the wisdom Dr. Clayman presents is applicable to leaders throughout healthcare, not just those who are, or wish to become, dean of a medical school. Dr. Clayman has done a wonderful job organizing and synthesizing the collective wisdom of deans throughout the country. There are so many pearls of wisdom that have daily application. Wonderful to have the wisdom of so many bright people compiled in one place.
As a former vice chancellor for health sciences and dean of a school of medicine at two different institutions, I read this book with great interest. It is a "must-read" for anyone contemplating assuming such positions as well as those already in the positions. I wish I had had the benefit of reading this book earlier in my career. Kudos to Dr. Clayman!!
Ralph Clayman has written a very easy to read book on the ins and outs of being a dean. The book though is much more than that. Everyone in academic medicine runs a smaller enterprise where this book can help. Clayman writes in a very clear and relateable style. For surgeons and others who want to be leaders, this book is a must read.
Timely book that provides insight on the workings of academic leadership and administration. A remarkable effort indeed to compile and distill these pearls from the combined experience of deans accross the country.Whether or not you aspire to achieve a leadership position in your institution, this book allows you to appreciate the challenges deans face and how to best work within the "system". Applicants for Decanal positions obviously must study this book.
I purchased the book a few weeks ago and just finished it. I enjoyed it very much. I learned a lot about how academic medical centers are structured, the different administrative priorities Schools of Medicine face and challenges encountered by new Deans. I found the work very interesting and valuable despite being mid-career and not in senior leadership.
