This book is narrated in Mike's voice, and he's an extremely likable narrator, which I think is why this book is so fun to read, even though it tackles some heavier issues like coming out as a teenager - something probably never easy even if one has a great circle of friends and loving family. Mike sees the good in everybody, and that makes it easier for me as a reader to see the good in Mike (because he's likable, but he also smokes weed and drinks and lazes around and is happy with getting C grades, all things which my straight-laced little soul cringes at). And there is a lot of good in Mike - he's a supportive friend to all his friends, he's a great older brother, a good son, a very good sport, and super soft-hearted. He is also smart, funny, and has a goofy self-awareness of his own teenage angst that carries him through his problems. A lot of emotional stuff happens closer to the end of the book, and I did get a little teary-eyed, but it was in the best way, and this is one of those really good teenage coming-of-age books.
I was so surprised by this book, it just melted me. I really am not typically a fan of the YA genre, only if the writing really grabs me-this book hooked me. It was quirky, sweet, had the HS awkward moments yet brought back those fun memories of HS. The in the moment nothing's that I loved. I enjoyed the whole friendship moments so much and how much each one was valued, different and special. The progression and thoughts while Mike is figuring things out. I also found so much of this story just enjoyable - the characters, they were all real people not ornamental. I felt the relationship, it was timed well built well the chemistry was perfect- Funny banter
This book sucked me in from the first page. The voice of the prose is an absolute joy to read. Goslee has perfectly encapsulate the voice of the American teenager. Mike is an incredibly relatable character, and his development is top-notch. He goes from an apathetic kind of shotty person who hates talking about his feelings to somebody who can recognize and act on his emotions, even recognizing when he's made a mistake and owns up to it. All of the other characters are so full of life and depth as well. I really feel like I'm reading about actual people with lives and thoughts and motivations. This book has quickly become one of my faves.
One of the best HS coming out stories that I have read in a while. Main character is an alt-rock god and awesomely clueless but it’s all of the other characters who make his story so rich and engaging. It’s about friendship and the ties that Mike has to everyone else, including the people in his school and neighborhood, connections that he sometimes misinterprets or misunderstands, all coming together to make us understand who Mike really is. Definitely worth the investment of time. The plot ends up where you think it will but the twists and turns along the way are priceless.
This book was so, so, so hot. And fun. But seriously 110% hot.And it's just damn innocent handies!!!I'm. Mhhhh. This being said, pity it was longer and I'm so happy I couldn't recognise the original characters each of them were supposed to be - I loved this book on its own but now I want twenty like this, damn.
This is a perfect example of what a YA coming out novel should look like. Mike's thoughts/actions/voice came across as a teenager not an adult writing a teenager and his struggle coming out came off as genuine and not manufactured like a lot of other YA books I read.
If you're looking for a short, fun read that tackles a serious topic in a not-so-serious way, I wholly recommend Whatever. It's definitely not a literary masterpiece, but that's not what the book is wanting to be regardless. It's a coming-of-age story about a boy who's dealing with a new facet of his sexuality, and the book explores that pretty faithfully. Yes, there is some romance, and it's definitely cute, but the book does mainly center on how our protagonist Mike deals with this new found knowledge as a pretty typical hormonal teenager would, without hitting all of the past cliches. I thought the characters were great (pretty relatable for high school juniors, in my opinion), the relationships were refreshing (in particular Lisa and Mike), and there was more than enough humor and amusing scenes.I'm hoping for a sequel actually! Being inside of Mike Tate's head for a few hours was a doozy, but a journey I would definitely take again.
i first read this story, when it was a online story published on A03. From the first time i read it, i loved its characters and the incredible adventure it contained. reading it again, with its improvements and longer story, i can easily say i enjoyed it even more. if you are a fan of awkward teens, complex love stories, and witty punk and rock music references then you will enjoy this book.
