I am very interested in the evolution of the English language and have often wondered about the background and source of many of the phrases used in everyday speech - many of which don't make literal sense. So, when I saw the synopsis of this book, I was hooked. After reading the introduction and a chapter in a half, however, I could not go on. I am sure that there is useful information in there somewhere, but I found it nearly impossible to get by the endless stream of trite phrases pieced together by the author in his narrative. Rather than present a common phrase and look at its source and evolution, the author merely spouts a series of related phrases as if to show how "smart" he is. This might be entertaining as a comedic stage act, but I find it totally unacceptable in a scholarly work.If a reader wants to be entertained, this book may be just right. If, instead, he/she wants to explore the English language to better understand its origin and use, then this book will disappoint.
Seems to be complete conjecture...and it's just plain boring. Was planning to order the hard copy for a word-lover friend. Glad I decided to read it first and save myself the embarrassment.
This is a fun book. It is well-written and the author uses humor to give spice to his descriptions. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
A must for any lovers of the English language! Nicely written, informative and tremendous detail. Entertaining.
A well written easy to read explanation about the English expressions we know and love or not. Focus is on where did come from and what do they really mean.
Clever presentation. After a while became a bit repetitive, but not unexpected. I read it between other books

I was disappointed in the format. Reads more like a text book than simple definitions and brief descriptions of expressions.
