I thought this would be a fun book for the kids in the family & that they would learn some useful facts too.It is fun, because they choose where they want to visit & how to visit. Take a ship, balloon ride, train, camel, etc.; sometimes choose how many hours or days you want to travel, sometimes choose which direction you want to travel. Arriving at your destination will give you a couple facts about the area, but all the illustrations are hand drawn, there are no actual photos of the destination & there is no map showing where in the world you are.I think a map should be included on the page for each destination & a couple actual photos too.Also a it would be nice to have a world map, which labels each destination, at the end of the book.I'm rating this book at 3 1/2 stars. Normally I'd round up to 4, but this time I'm choosing a 3 rating...which means it's Okay, or Average.
As others have said, this is essentially Choose Your Own Destination. My preschooler absolutely loves this. I think I've probably heard of all the places in this book, but I'm sure not too many other kids that age have heard of Wuppertal and Chiang Mai! I love the variety of places they go, and the different modes of transportation, too. The tidbits about each destination are cool. I suppose it's understandable that they don't go into too much detail of the negatives (e.g., when it comes to Johannesburg or Berlin). A few things I think could have been better: 1) Maps! Even small ones would have helped. My preschooler may now know Wuppertal, but doesn't have any idea where it is in relation to home. 2) Photos! I can see how these might have cluttered things up, but small photos might have made this more interesting. (And there are plenty of free ones they could have used, if cost was going to be an issue.) 3) Did Zak really have to be a white boy? In this day and age, at least having a boy and a girl, and one of them being of color, would have been a nice touch.But, overall, I think this book is pretty cool. I know I'd have loved it when I was in preschool.
This is a fun interactive book for a target audience of ages 9 to 12. My kids all enjoyed it, as did I, so I think that range is very flexible. This book reminds of the choose your own adventure books I used to read as a kid, in which you choose where to go or how to deal with things that arise during the story. Around the World in 50 Ways starts the readers in London and they choose how to go from there, by car or train, east or west, etc. Depending on the choice, you end up in a different wonderful city.Each city has a colorful layout with illustrations and short snipets of interesting information about the location. I really like that it has things like text boxes and bullet points. It makes it easy to quickly read and move on to the next place on my journey. I think this is also important for young readers who don't want to read a large block of factual text. They can absorb a few short items about a lot of well-known places. I think Lonely Planet did an excellent job of creating a book that will interest and inform kids.
Around the World in 50 Ways allows you to choose your own adventure. Will you choose a ride in a JEEP? A cruise ship, train or bus? Or even ride around town on a bicycle? Your journey begins in London and then your adventure begins! it will ask you "Where next?" and you will have to make a choice? We chose the boat and it instructed us to go to page 8. Ahh how awesome! On page 8, we boarded our cruise ship! It not only shows you a drawing of your cabin, but tells you about your cruise ship with some fun facts! For example, each week the kitchen cooks up 18,000 slices of pizza! Your next choice is to either go 1 day east or 4 days west. We chose 4 days west so we could stay on the ship longer! Where did we end up? In the greatest city in the world! New York City! Again, there is a description of the Big Apple and some of the sights you will see. So many amazing cities in the world. This book is awesome to use with a globe! I have to admit, there were a couple of cities I had to look up! A fun way for your child to have an adventure or just read about cities in our world. Personally, I liked having the choice of where to go and the mystery involved. It is also nice because the kids can put the book down and pick it up again and again. It's always a new adventure! It reminds me of the "Choose your own ending" or "Choose your own adventure" books we have and enjoy. An excellent book. If I could make it better in any way, I would prefer actual pictures of the cities instead of the drawings. Definitely not a negative though! Keep in mind, if you choose the right route, it will take you around the world and you will end up back in London where you began your journey. If not, you will find the "Dead End" sign. No worries because each page can be a new choice with a new adventure!
