I am the grown daughter to a drunk mom. Drunk mom, now dead mom. I am trying to make sense of what she went through - so I can better understand why she couldn't love me the way I wanted her to. What I have found by reading this book is what I have been telling myself (but perhaps not believing) for over a decade. I don't know who to credit for this quote but it sums it up nicely - "Just because she didn't love me the way that I wanted, doesn't mean that she didn't love me with everything she had." Thank you for your raw honesty. It's brave! Keep coming back...
I'm only 110 pages in - but this book is written wonderfully. Honest and devastating. She writes like she feels. Throughout her book so far, I can feel a sense of guilt that is so modest and under spoken that it pulls at my heartstrings. I know when she refers to her child as "the baby" she's trying to separate from whatever she was feeling at the time and the connection she "should've" felt as a mother at that time.I understand her, and her writing speaks to me. I am very discerning when it comes to writing, especially memoirs, as they are often poorly written and jumbled. I can appreciate her honesty, as sad as her story is.Can't wait to finish. Will update if it strikes me to do so.
The book was a memoir. Not a solution for those who are expecting that or angry about it in the reviews. I liked her writing. She was open and very honest. Which is very brave of her. I dont know why people expected something out of her and put down the book bc she didn't meet their expectations. It was very interesting and I appreciate her putting her life and struggles as an alcoholic out there for the world. My mom is an alcoholic and I wanted to get an idea of what life for one is really like. Everyone's story is different obviously but I do appreciate and respect hers!
I was so excited after reading the reviews but honestly--this is a long book about the same thing over and over again. I haven't even finished it. I have read a lot of memoirs on addiction. I don't find this one shocking as one reviewer wrote or even funny. I have moved on to another book and I will force myself to come back to this one to finish it but alas it was disappointing.
I could not put this book down- it was finished in less than 24 hours. I could relate to so much of how the author felt about alcohol. Ive read a lot of memoirs about drinking, but this was phenomenal. I would recommend this book to anyone.
This was ok. Took me forever to get through. I appreciate her story and openness. Some things I found relatable, others I didn't. Towards the last several chapters I started to enjoy it more. The ending was abrupt, which I get it, but, I felt like I was in the middle of a chapter and then BOOM done. I dunno, wasn't great. But, the honesty was appreciated in some parts.
Definitely a heartbreaking story. I admire the author's bravery and transparency; her words are honest and raw. However, the writing got a bot old for me after the third chapter. Not sure if I would have kept reading it if I didn't have an assignment.
An open and honest account of the reality of addiction in women. This story reveals the secrets of many alcoholic women; hiding & buying alcohol,sneaking drinks in coffee cups or pop cans, stashing empties in drawers, laundry rooms, etc.A sad reality-great read.
