Since I just had a ride in a new orange Peterbilt for the Peterbilt Customer Appreciation Day, Nov 7, 2013 and I am thecreator of the board game WannaBtruckers I wanted to read a book about trucking to learn more about truckingso I can better relate to my customers. This book was hilarious and educational at the same time. I haven'tfinished it yet but can't wait for this evening when I have time. The ordinary driver out there does not knowwhat the good driver contends with--snow, border control, bad weather, economics. It is all here!!! A goodread. I really liked the chapter entitled "Some Truckers Get Lucky in Wyoming" because Campbellmake you feel how dangerous it is to drive in snow that comes on suddenly when you are on ahigh mountain pass and how much fun it is to listen to some C.B. talk from other drivers and howthat could give you an idea of the road ahead. Also, a female truck driver in a Peterbiltwas a help to him. The last chapter was about his Long Nose Pete named the Queen Mary andhow all his drivers wanted to drive this truck so he had to wait his turn. We should allappreciate these drivers who have to weight in, log in, and know the rules of the road.I really learned a lot from this author who writes as good as he drives.
Entertaining and interesting reading. From truck driver, to Mack and Western Star truck salesman, to fleet owner, Ted has done it all....I am very pleased I found this book. My pc kindle reader wouldnt open the illustrations that come with this book, which is a shame, but otherwise no disappointments here. Great read.
It felt like I was in the truck right there with you. I am Looking forward to the next book.
Ted Campbell’s “Fifty Years of Trucking†is a fascinating read for truckers, and entertaining even for readers like me who are clueless about trucking and many of the terms. The content and merit of the short stories remain intact even without a clear understanding of trucking terminology.Some of my favorites included firecrackers under the lunch pail; an unexpected corpse; a quick rubber band fix on a big rig; an encounter with a sasquatch; bewildered cows scattered for 20 miles along a highway; “Smuggling an Alien;†“My Mother the Bootlegger,†and the trip through a tornado—are we in Kansas, Toto?
I read Long Haul by Finn Murphy which I highly recommend and bought this book and did not like it.My recommendation. Don't buy it. Buy Long Haul instead.
