If you are familiar with lonely planet tour guides, then this is consistent with all of them in terms of layout and content.It breaks up the country by region and then drills down from there to the city level. At the city level the book will tell you places to stay, eat, and visit. It will highlight natural activities (glacial caps, dog sledding tours, aurora borealis, etc).Lonely Planets are great reference guides to help build an itinerary and are handy to carry with you once at your destination. I personally enjoy DK Eyewitnesses "Top 10" books and use that and a Lonely Planet book.I personally find that Lonely Planet books cater to backpackers. With the Iceland tour guide it is a little off the mark here as there really isn't a ton of "backpacking." Having said that, it does exactly what it purports to do, i.e., provide a guide to tour Iceland.Pros: Organized information readily accessible. Sold at a decent price by a well known and trusted travel guide brand. Information is relatively accurate (prices change through the years, restaurants open and close, and businesses move).Cons: Being resourceful, one can get all the information in the book through good web searches and a little planning and forethought. The problem is that the information will not be organized well and the accuracy can be questionable.
We recently returned from 10 days in Iceland (which I love, for reasons completely unrelated to this book). I checked out the older version of Lonely Planet's Iceland book at my library, then purchased this one as soon as it came out.I agree with most of the negative reviews (and find the positives somewhat puzzling and/or generic). Like another reviewer I was also thoroughly disgusted and wanted to pitch the book just outside of Akureyri. In short, this version seems like a lazy remake of the previous version, which wasn't that good to start with. It seems like the authors talked to a few people here and there, included those people's assessment of their own businesses and services, and then updated a few facts to give the impression of an up-to-date book.Of course, this wasn't our only source of information on Iceland and it shouldn't be for anyone (Rick Steves, help!). The tone of complete knowledge and helpfulness and experience got annoying after we realized how very partially helpful the book was. Good to read (check out from library if you can) before your trip, don't consider lodging/restaurants/business anywhere near inclusive, prices outdated in all currencies, many awesome sights not mentioned at all, use other resources to avoid getting burned like we did. Driving the ring road in 10 days required somewhat more micro-planning than we normally do, but was worth it, especially after freeing ourselves from this book.
I was very disappointed when I read all the bad reviews about this book, despite those reviews I went ahead and bought the book. When arrived to Reykjavik, I found a lot of information and seemed the book was just a waste of money, however this is not a tourist's book, it is for the adventurous people who enjoy the countryside. If you go to Iceland and expect to stay in the big cities such as Reykjavik or Akureyri don't buy the book cause you will feel disappointed, buy this book if you want to explore the country by yourself.In Reykjavik you can find plenty of things to do, but once you are in the countryside this book is useful, although is very far from perfect I couldn't imagine myself without it.
The internal links are awful. If I click on the "Map" by CentreHotel Plaza for example, I get taken to a seemingly random map at location 2134 with no indication where the hotel is on the map and, unless I have highlighted the hotel or remembered its location in the eBook, no easy way of going back to the original entry.Navigation in general isn't great. The only way I could find for going back to the hotel was to go to the Table of Contents, choose Reykjavik, choose "Sleeping", and then flip forward to the location with the listing of the hotel.I don't understand why there isn't an Index since everything has a location. For example I stumbled across "What to do in two days" but I forgot to highlight it and still haven't been able to find it again.It would be nice if the maps were in color and took advantage of the iPad to scroll and enlarge, but maybe that's a limitation of the Kindle edition.And finally, it's more than a little annoying in 2013 to be told repeated about things that *might* happen in 2011.
We used this book for our four-day stop-over in Iceland last September (2011) on the way to Europe. It was very outdated, despite being an edition that was only 3 months old. I don't have the previous version, but I can't imagine they did any updating. Prices of hotels (and we were traveling in the lower season) were often 2.5 times higher than the book stated. The coolest places we visited were either not mentioned in the book or had only 2 sentences. I would try ANY other guidebook.
This is a very good guide. There is a new edition this years so I would buy the new one. But Lonely Planet guides offer a lot of really useful information. I used this one earlier this year when my husband and I went to Iceland and it helped us make the most of our trip.
We just returned from a 10-day trip to Iceland where we drove the Ring Road and put 2200 kilometers on our rental car. It was GREAT to have this up-to-date guide book. While I sometimes wished for more details and cool facts about the sights we were seeing, this book definitely guided us well. It did a good job of providing details about how to get to the sights, being sure to differentiate between those that were and were not accessible by two-wheel drive car (EXTREMELY important in Iceland). I highly recommend this guide book!
This book was written before 2010, therefore it's missing a lot of important cultural hallmarks in the city, such as the Harpa that was built in 2011. Also, several of the recommended restaurants have closed in the last 2 years.Could use more pictures.
