I purchased this for my young grandson as I wanted to show how animals have helped us such as police dogs, military dogs, rescue dogs, etc. The sad thing about this book is that the dog is sent up to space but there is no way for him to return. Depending upon the age of the child, it may be sad for him even though knowledge was obtained.
My daughter in first grade had chosen a project on Animals in Space. I was looking for a book as a resource and I stumbled upon this one. The book is very well written and illustrated. It is easy to read and comprehend for a first grader. There are some very minute details about the space trip of Laika. Needless to say, my daughter was able to get information for her project. The book was quite helpful!
very nice version of the russian space dog for little kids interested in space and the first of the dogs and monkeys that made it to space.Nice fit with kindergarten/ first grade subject matter.Got it for our granddaughter when her class was studying planets and space. Good hook for all kids but a nice angle especially to get girlsmore interested.
Laika will always be remembered.

poor puppy Iam glad they have a stague in his honor laika you will be miss it always the first dog in space cosmonaut hero at space Academy in Russia there is statue of little jackrussell pup they should made movie like robinson criso on mars which is very good movie I don't care for the monkey astronaut he got on my neverious after awhile.
Horrible mistake. I'm glad I read this book before I read it to the kids. This goes straight to the recycling.I realize the story is realistic, but it's horribly harsh and if anything it teaches kids that it's great to experiment, torture and kill animals for the sake of advancements in science and technology.It goes into detail about how the dog is tortured daily, how the dog's friends all die from the experiments, and how the dog eventually dies in space. Taken from the book: "After a few hours into her flight, the cabin began to overheat. There was nothing Laika could do. Her body gave in to heat and fright. For Laika, the trip had ended."Then they top it off with an actual photograph of the real Laika in her cramped "cabin"which looks like a soviet torture chamber the size of a baby incubator and a sad and scared looking dog strapped into it.I do not recommend this book for any child of any age.
I am so disturbed by this book. It portrays the life and sacrifice of Laika and Sputnik 2, however, I cannot get beyond the impact that this would have on my students and their families. This story confronts all of our worst fears relating to laboratory animals and animal loss. The Afterword, though accurate, is deeply disheartening as we all realize that there was no plan for Laika to safely return. I will not add this book to a K-5 library collection.
